Apex comes from behind to defeat East and win first state title
The Apex Cougars, in their fourth year as a lacrosse program, hit paydirt and won the state 4A title over reigning champion East Chapel Hill on May 21, 2005, coming from behind to win their first state championship 8-7. The win came directly following Charlotte Catholic's 9-8 over Western Guilford in a game that was eerily similar to the East-Apex game. Both top seeds, Western and East Chapel Hill, took leads and then seemed to run out of gas. The two lower seeds, Charlotte Catholic and Apex, scored multiple unanswered goals to regain the lead and never lost it, despite the close finishes in both games. East fell behind 2-0 in the first quarter but tied it at 2-2 by halftime. They had the lead at 5-4 at the end of the third period and then seemed to lose their edge. Apex scored three unanswered to make it 7-5 with 6:30 left. East cut it to 7-6 at 2:47 but couldnt close the gap by the buzzer. Apex scoring was led by Nick Patrone with 2g and 1a, Matt Holzworth with 2g and 2a, Nate Tomlinson with 2g, Froggy Spinks with 1g and Andrew Bergland with 2a. East was led by Tim Kihlstrom with 2g and 1a, Tony Mendes with 2g, Vanya Almekinders and Uly Lim with 1g each, and Dwight Weld witn 1a. Apex goalie David Hetu had 9 saves. East goalie Wally MacGregor had 5 saves. Offensive MVP of the game was Apex attackman Matt Holzworth. Defensive MVP was Apex defenseman Ross Thornton. |
Charlotte Catholic defeats Western 9-8 to win state title
The Charlotte Catholic Cougars came from behind on May 21, 2005 to defeat the top-seeded Western Guilford Hornets 9-8 in the NCHSLA 2A/3A Championship game. Western led 4-2 after one quarter and 7-4 at the 8:14 mark of the second period. That was the last goal Western would score until there were only 53.8 seconds left in the game, and that goal only brought them to within one goal. Meanwhile Charlotte Catholic reeled off five unanswered to take a 9-7 lead with 5:30 to go in the game. Charlotte Catholics Alex Federal, who had 4 goals, was named the games offensive MVP. Western goalie Scott Bowles, with 16 saves, 4 in a two-minute period in the 3rd quarter, was named defensive MVP. Federal led the Cougars with 4 goals, Brendan Egan had 1g and 1a, Colin Bosse, Jason Lewis, Nick Mariello and Matt McKenna had 1 g each, and Pat Hogan and R.J. Sweeney each had an assist. Cougar goalie Doug Harris had 15 saves. For Western, Kellen Edenfield had 3g and 1a, Steven Krasicky had 2g and 1a, Austin Claytor had 1g and 1a, Dan Markowski had 1g, 1a, and Chevy Peake had 1g. |
| T-SHIRT SAMPLES: The color separations are done for the t-shirts. I've put up some graphics showing how the shirt would look on gray, white and yellow shirts. You can see them here. Will try to get the stuff to the screenprinters tomorrow. Meantime, you can begin deciding what you want to order. |

Season begins with three new coaches Coach Kirkley says jury still out on outlook for 2005 |
||
| Posted Feb. 17, 2005, 8 p.m. The 2005 version of the Riverside Pirates lacrosse team welcomes three new coaches and a lot of unanswered questions as the pre-season practice period begins.
Last year's varsity assistants, Pete Kitrinos and Greg Tate, could not join the team again this year due to job demands. But Al D'Amelio, who just recently moved to the area from New York and who played college lacrosse at Cornell, will assume the role of assistant coach in charge of offense for the Pirates. Coaching the JV squad this year will be two Riverside alums. Anthony Howard ('03) and T.L. Hutchins ('04) will balance academic demands as N.C. State students with the demands of coaching the Riverside junior varsity squad.
On defense, seniors Murray Forbes and Chris Woolley will be joined by sophomore Matt Weaver. Backing them up will be Stephen Crockett, Derek Adrian and Bobby Trimble. At longstick middie, Kieron James and David Atwater will share time. In goal will be Brad Smith, a two-year starter on JV who watched all-state goalies Zach Brewer and Brian Ring start for the varsity in 2003 and 2004. "In the final analysis, this is a young Pirate team, from the players to the coaching staff, with a lot of adjustments and growth to be had," Kirkley said. |

Potluck dinner kicks off 2005 season Mulch Madness plans announced, 2005 senior captains introduced Posted Jan. 7, 2005, 3 p.m. The Riverside Pirate family kicked off the 2005 season on Dec. 6 at St. Luke's Episcopal Church with nearly 200 players, parents and fans attending. The two main items of business were to announce this year's fundraising efforts and to announce the 2005 captains.
Randy Smith, known as The Mulchman among Riverside lax faithful, announced that the ambitious goal for this year's Mulch Madness fundraiser is $12,000. That money will be used to buy new uniforms and equipment and also to provide scholarships for team trips for those who might not be able to pay the full price. Coach Kirkley pointed out that the JV team currently plays in the same jerseys that were used by the inaugural 1993 varsity Pirates. The first mulch sales event will be Saturday, Jan. 15, when the team will meet at American Village Park on American Drive at 8:30 a.m. wearing RHS team attire. They will canvass the neighborhood and begin taking orders for mulch. They will canvass another neighborhood on Jan. 22. All mulch sales must be paid in advance and are by delivery only. The cost of $5 per bag of hardwood mulch includes delivery to the buyer's home where it will be neatly stacked in the place of the buyer's choosing. Delivery date is March 5. Players should expect to deliver from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. |
