The Chapel Hill Tigers and the Apex Cougars exchanged the lead in this game of the big cats for two quarters, but the Tigers finally put some air between themselves and Apex in the third period and held the lead, coming away with a 12-8 win and another state championship.

In the first three minutes, however, it didn't look as if the Tigers would win a second state championship in a row. Apex came out hot and scored two straight goals to go up 2-0. Joe Nugent scored on a Jordan Eicher assist at 9:56 and Parker Wilson scored on a Kane Ateshian assist at 9:05 with Apex in the man-up.

It took two more minutes for the Tigers to come alive, and come alive they did. They scored three goals in a little more than a minute to take a 3-2 lead. At 7:56 Logan Corey, the games offensive MVP, score unassisted for the first of his six goals, followed by unassisted goals by William Scroggs at 7:15 and John Haus at 6:43.

Apex answered with two unanswered goals as the first period ended, with Connor Tyo scoring on a Wilson assist at 5:14 and Will Doyle scoring unassisted with only 18 seconds left in the period, giving the Cougars a 4-3 lead after 12 minutes.

The Tigers, as they had in the first period, scored another three straight in the second period to go up 6-4. First, Corey scored unassisted in a man-up situation at 9:07, then Scroggs scored a short-handed goal unassisted at 7:04. But the third in that series was a doozy. Corey and Haus crossed near the restraining line, with Haus going right and Corey moving left. Corey seemed to flip the ball to Haus, who drove right and made a strong shot on goal. Trouble was, he didn't have the ball. As the defense followed Haus, Corey put the ball in the net for Chapel Hill's sixth goal at 5:24.

Apex added a goal of its own at 3:11 as John Szep passed to Nugent for a score that made it 6-5 Chapel Hill at the half. It was almost tied at the half, but Chapel Hill goalie Ryan Montgomery made a huge save with only 5 seconds remaining in the half to preserve the lead.

The Tigers opened the third period with two unanswered goals to take an 8-5 lead. John Haus scored on a Scroggs assist from over the net at 11:00. Stephen Burns scored on a Haus assist at 10:50 after a faceoff infraction by Apex gave Chapel Hill the man advantage.

Each team added another goal in the third period. At 3:57 Apex's Will Donovan rambled from midfield and scored with his longpole to make it 8-6, and then, with only 30 seconds remaining, Corey scored his fourth goal on a stutter-step move to beat his man and put the ball in the net unassisted to make the score 9-6 with 12 minutes remaining.

The Chapel Hill lead was almost four goals at the end of three periods, but Apex's freshman goalie Emil Weiss, who was named the game's defensive MVP for his 22 saves, made a big save with only 5 seconds remaining in the period, just as his Chapel Hill counterpart had done in the previous quarters.

Apex scored the first goal of the final period at 10:33 when Szep scored on an Ateshian assist to make it 9-7. They had an extra-man opportunity at 8:59 and looked like they might cut the Tiger lead to one goal, but they couldn't capitalize. Chapel Hill had an extra-man try of its own two minutes later but also couldn't score.

At 3:59 Corey, playing at attack instead of his customary midfield slot, scored his fifth goal, running to the right 10 yards out and flinging the ball in the net right-handed to make it 10-7. He scored his sixth goal of the game less than 20 seconds later at 3:37 to up the lead to 11-7.

Apex added its final goal at 1:21 as Eicher scored unassisted to make it 11-8. The Tigers added a final tally with 23 seconds left as Stephen Burns, last year's offensive MVP, scored to make the final score 12-8.

The Charlotte Catholic Cougars, probably still smarting from their defeat last year at the hands of Western Guilford, took all the suspense out of this game with a 6-0 second period and cruised to an 18-7 win over the Cardinal Gibbons Crusaders in the 2A/3A championship game on May 17, 2008 at Duke University.

Catholic jumped to a 2-0 lead on goals by Matt Hogan on a Colin Bosse assist at 10:41 and a Matt O'Neil goal on a Bosse assist at 9:38. The Crusaders made it 2-1 at 6:18 as Austin Hardy scored on a Joe Panzl assist in a man-up.

The Cougars answered at 2:50 on an unassisted goal by game MVP Mike Sawyer to make it 3-1. But at 2:06 the Crusaders cut the lead to 3-2 on a pretty play as Camden Feldman scored on a Chris Nelson assist. The Cougars added one more in the period as Will Baker scored unassisted to make it 4-2 after one period.

The second period was all Charlotte Catholic as they outscored Cardinal Gibbons 6-0. Sawyer scored unassisted at 9:53 as he beat the defense down the field after an offsides was called on the Crusaders, Stephen Banick scored unassisted at 8:57 as his shot managed to dribble between the feet of the Crusader goalie, O'Neil scored unassisted at 8:26, Bosse scored unassisted at 2:32 and again unassisted at 2:23, and Bosse ended the scoring in the period with a goal on an assist from Matt Sawyer at 1:11, to make it 10-2 as the half ended.

The Crusaders could have used the services of senior Alex Beuris, its best defender who was named to the All-State First Team after the game, during that stretch. But he did not play, still recuperating from an incident in a recent regular-season game in which he had to be revived on the field with an AED (automated external defibrillator) after getting hit in the chest by a ball. NCHSLA Commissioner Jim Kirkley stressed during the awards ceremony after the game the importance of each school having an AED on the sideline during all lacrosse games and practices.

The Crusaders scored four goals in the third period but couldn't make up any ground as the Cougars scored four more of their own. Cardinal Gibbons opened the scoring in the period on a goal by Feldman on an assist from Nelson to make it 10-3. Feldman scored unassisted on a nifty turn-around at 9:28 to make it 10-4.

Charlotte Catholic responded with four unanswered goals to make it 14-4. Bosse scored on a Baker assist at 7:18, Matt Sawyer scored on a Baker assist at 5:52, Brett Buening scored on a Matt Sawyer assist at 5:03 and Mike Sawyer scored on a low-to-high shot at 4:52.

Cardinal Gibbons added to more before the end of the period to make it 14-6. At 1:42 Hardy scored on a left-handed zinger to make it 14-5, and with 41 seconds remaining Nelson scored on a Feldman assist to make the score 14-6 as the third period ended.

The Cougars scored three unanswered in the first five minutes of the final period to go up 17-6. Baker scored on an O'Neil assist at 8:29, Mike Sawyer scored on a Hogan assist at 8:17, and Bosse scored on a Mike Sawyer assist at 7:32. The Crusaders added their final goal at 5:27 when Packy Mueller scored to make it 17-7.

Robert Price added the final goal for the Cougars on a left-hander with 3:20 remaining to make the final score 18-7.

Charlotte Catholic defenseman Angelo Acitelli was named the game's defensive MVP.
