Two Pirates coaching in NCAA Tournament
Former Riverside stars assistants for UNC and Mount Saint Mary's |
Posted May 10, 2010, 9 p.m.
Chris Feifs, left, and Cory Coffman, right, now coaching at Division 1 schools playing in the NCAA tournament. |
When the NCAA lacrosse tournament gets underway this weekend, it will make history for the NCAA as well as for Riverside lacrosse. Two former Pirates, Chris Feifs (RHS '02) and Cory Coffman (RHS '03), will be on the sidelines as assistant coaches.
Feifs will be wearing Carolina blue as the Tar Heels take on Delaware in the first round, and Coffman will be wearing the dark blue of Mount Saint Mary's as they face the tough task of playing top-seeded Virginia.
Both player are former RHS captains and All-Americans. Feifs was on three state championship teams at RHS ('99, '01, '02) and Coffman was on two ('01, '02). Both played key roles in possibly Riverside's most exciting game, the 2002 state championship game against Chapel Hill, which Riverside won in overtime.
"We have two former RHS players as assistant coaches in the NCAA Divison 1 tournament this year," said former Riverside Head Coach Jim Kirkley. "That's pretty sharp!! Can't say I ever expected that to happen."

The Pirates have a habit of pulling off come-from-behind victories down on the coast. They did it against Cape Fear Academy earlier this year and they did it on April 30 in the first round of the NCHSAA playoffs, defeating Ashley High School 10-8.
Carson Sterling had four goals in the contest, including the goal that tied the game at 8. He then had an assist on the ninth and go-ahead goal, which was scored by Brad Hinkle. And he scored the final tally to put it out of reach with three minutes remaining. Peter Ratcliffe had three goals and an assist, Mitchell Fagert had two goals, Hinkle had one goal, and Joe Weitz and Grant Cullinan each had an assist.
The game began inauspiciously, with the Ashley scoreboard showing only the minute and no seconds. It was impossible to tell how much time was left in periods or in penalties. (Please get that fixed, guys!)
Riverside scored first on a goal by Fagert on a Sterling assist in the sixth minute of the first period. Ashley tied it in the eighth minute of the period, and Riverside pulled ahead with an extra-man goal with about two minutes left in the period. They went up 3-1 about 30 seconds later when Sterling scored unassisted. With seven seconds left, Ashley managed to score after taking possession on a Riverside out-of-bounds pass with 39 seconds remaining. The period ended with Riverside up 3-2.
Both teams scored two goals each in the second period. Ashley tied it six minutes in on a goal by Josh Butler. But an unassisted goal by Ratcliffe a couple of minutes later put Riverside back up 4-3. However, Ashley attackman Jay Denoyer scored unassisted in the 10th minute of the period to tie the game at 4.
A minute later, Fagert put Riverside ahead again, 5-4, to take a slim lead into halftime.
The Eagles outscored the Pirates 4-1 in the fourth period. Ben Jacobson scored to tie it at 5-5, but a high rifle shot by Sterling made it 6-5 Riverside. But the Eagles ran off three straight to end the period with an 8-6 lead, with Denoyer, Jacobson and Butler each scoring unassisted.
Riverside got a break at the beginning of the fourth period when an Ashley player's stick pocket was ruled illegal. Though they didn't score in the man-up, they scored just as the penalty ended, with Ratcliffe getting the rebound garbage goal to cut the lead to 7-8. Three minutes later Sterling scored again with a high rifle shot to the top right of the net to tie the game at 8-8.
Another penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct on Ashely gave the Pirates a man-up opportunity, and they didn't waste it. Hinkle took a pass from Sterling and added the go-ahead goal in the sixth minute of the contest to make it 9-8.
Ashley tried furiously to score, with Denoyer and Butler shooting at will, but Riverside goalie Chris Spathis, who had 20 saves, had answers for them, as did the RHS defenders, who bottled up the Eagle's leading scorers and forced turnovers or bad shots, holding them scoreless for the final period. One of the defensive highlights during this furious period was defenseman Grant Muir's field-goal-like kick of a loose ball that managed to keep it out of Ashley's hands for a few more precious seconds.
With three minutes remaining in the game, Sterling put a low bouncer in for an insurance goal. Riverside ran out the clock for their first playoff win since 2006.
Riverside took 28 shots to Ashley's 45. Ashley led in groundballs 26-24. Spathis had 20 saves and Ashley's goalie had 10 saves.

The season got off to a sluggish start for the Pirates on March 6 early in their opening game against the Cary Imps. For seven minutes both teams played dropsy and couldn't score. But with 4:57 Riverside got on the board and never looked back.
Mitchell Fagert took the assist from Carson Sterling for that first goal, and the Pirates added two more before the first period ended, one from Sterling unassisted at 3:44 and another by Ben Bortner from Sterling at 3:17.
Riverside added two more in the second period, another by Sterling from Fagert at 6:57 and one from Grant Cullinan unassisted at 2:44. Meanwhile, Riverside goalie Chris Spathis was keeping all the Cary shots out of the net, ending the night with his first shutout. The buzz among the Pirate faithful in the stands was the quality of Spathis' outlet passes, as he was zinging 40-yarders with pinpoint accuracy. He registerd three of his 11 saves in the first half.
While the scoreboard was pristine at the half the penalty line in the scorebook was not. The Pirates were called for three personal fouls and three technicals for a total of 3:30 in the penalty box. The managed, however, to keep the Imps out of the goal for that period.
It was more of the same in the second half, with the Pirates scoring another unanswered in the third period while keeping Cary off the board entirely. Riverside scored in a man-up at 1:33 of the third period as Brad Hinkle scored on a Fagert assist to make it 6-0 after three.
The Pirates scored five more unanswered in the final period to push the final score to 11-0. Scoring were Sterling at 10:29 unassiste to make it 7-0, Bortner unassisted at 7:24 to make it 8-0, Fagert from Sterling at 6:23 to make it 9-0, Hinkle from Sterling at 5:06 to make it 10-0, and Sterling unassisted at 1:39 to make it 11-0.
Riverside's Spathis had 11 saves in the game while Cary goalie Javii Ortiz had 10. Riverside outshot the Imps 35-18, and had 37 ground balls to Cary's 19. Riverside won 7 of 14 faceoffs, with Steven Greer going 7 got 11 and Jake Pennigar going 0 for 3.
The coaching staffs of the two teams on the field Friday represented 11 North Carolina state lacrosse championships. Riverside head coach Glenn Estacio was a part of Riverside's four championships (1998, 1999, 2001, 2002), Riverside assistant coach Evan Leekley was part of two (1998, 1999) and Cary head coach Scott Gordon was a captain of Riverside's first championship team in 1998. Gordon also holds the distinction of being Riverside's first High School All-American.
RHS JV 10, Cary JV 0
Coach Mark Abbott's JV Pirates defeated the Cary JVs 10-0 on March 6. Tyler Green, Jacob Meleny and Sam Austin had two goals each, while Matt Smith, Jonathan Titus, Will Hallen and Adam Bortner each had an assist.
RHS had 37 ground balls to 33 for Cary, and they outshot the Imps 29 to 8. Riverside won 6 of 11 faceoffs.

RHS lacrosse conditioning tests Feb. 13
Tests begin with frosh at 9, end with seniors at 10:30 |
Posted Feb. 9, 2010, 1 p.m.
The Riverside lacrosse conditioning tests will be held on Saturday, Feb. 13. Players will be divided by class, with the festivities beginning at 9 a.m., Coach Glenn Estacio has announced.
Tests for each grade will begin at the following times:
• Freshmen - 9:00
• Sophomores - 9:30
• Juniors - 10:00
• Seniors - 10:30
Players should plan on arriving 15-20 minutes ahead of their start time to check in and stretch. Players do NOT have to arrive before this time (for example, seniors are not expected to show up at 9 a.m.). Players are urged NOT be late for their start time.
Players are reminded to dress for cold weather.
Also, parent volunteers are needed to help with the stopwatches.
These tests originally conflicted with Coach Sliwa's FCA tryouts, but I understand Coach Sliwa has changed the tryouts to 2-5 p.m. on Saturday. Watch the forum for any updates.
| One more IMPORTANT reminder: anyone who does not have a valid physical on file will NOT be allowed to practice or participate in games until they do!!! |
|
Practice for 2010 season begins on Feb. 15
Coach Estacio has some info for players before practice begins |
Posted Feb. 5, 2010, 9 a.m.
With the beginning of practice a little over a week away, Coach Estacio has a few reminders for players.
1. Get your physicals and residence forms in? You can't participate without them!
2. The conditioning test is next Saturday, Feb. 13. More details on that this weekend.
3. The first day of practice is Monday, Feb. 15, not Feb. 16 as previously announced. Players should be sure to have the following things on that day:
• helmet (take off ALL Riverside stickers....stripes, awards, R...EVERYTHING. Those have to be earned.). The only thing you should have on your helmet is your last name written on a piece of masking tape.
• all pads (shoulder, arm, gloves, mouthpiece).
• shoes for the field AND the parking lot/gym.
• appropriate clothing for the weather (shorts, sweats, etc).
4. This year, practice will start at a different time: 3:30! For the first week of tryouts, this will apply to all players. The following week, once varsity and JV have been separated, JV will start practice at 3, and varsity will start at 3:30. Players are urged to attend study hall or lift weights between the end of school and the beginning of practice. They should make sure to be on the field and dressed when practice starts. If not, it means you are late and will incur severe consequences.
E-mail Coach Estacio (link at bottom of this page) if you have any questions. |
Coach gives 2010 info at kickoff dinner
Schedule for players, Mulch Madness details given at get-together |
Posted Jan. 25, 2010, 1 p.m.

Coach Glenn Estacio discusses the 2010 season at the annual kickoff dinner at Gray Stone Baptist Church on Jan. 19 |
There was a great turnout for the kickoff dinner on Tuesday, Jan. 19. Here is a synopsis of the topics discussed after the feast:
1. The coaching staff was introduced: Coach Glenn Estacio will be taking over the defensive responsibilities this season. RHS alum Evan Leekley returns for his second coaching stint with the team and will direct the offense. Coach Mark Abbott will once again lead the JV team. Coach Estascio said there may be one more addition to the staff later.
2. Coach Estacio went over some of the areas where he and the other coaches will need help. Here is a list of areas where fans and parents can volunteer their time:
• filming home and away games (either from field level...for the end-of-year highlight reel, or from the press box...for team scouting, teaching, and recruiting)
• younger siblings to serve as ballboys during games
• statisticians for home and away games (should contact Sally Austin)
• supplying oranges for JV and varsity home and away games (see link to orange sign-up sheet at top of this page)
• working in the concession stand for JV and Varsity home games (see link to concession sign-up sheet at top of this page)
3. Estacio reminded everyone that all prospective players MUST fill out a residency form and have an up-to-date physical to be eligible. Also, students have to have passed at least 3 classes in the fall semester. (See links to these forms at the top of this page.)
4.Coach Estacio also went over the schedule for players:
• conditioning test is Saturday, Feb. 13th
• first day of practice is Tuesday, Feb. 16
• complete schedule is now on rhslacrosse.com (see link at top of page and on the forum page)
• Spring Break is in Wilmington. The team will leave on Thursday, April 8 in the morning and return Saturday, April 10, in the afternoon/evening. Varsity players are required to go...JV players are welcome.
5. The rhslacosse.com Webmaster is asking for volunteers to help take stats for the games he can't make it to, and to take game photos when possible. Stat continuity is important. For cumulative stats to mean anything, all games must be included. In the next few days the Webmaster will post some details on what is needed.
6. Mr. Ratcliffe spoke about the game program for the year. If you have an idea of someone who may want to advertise in the program, let me or Mr. Ratcliffe know.
7. Mr. Bortner and Mr. Tedder spoke about the Mulch Madness fundraiser. This is Riverside Lacrosse's primary fundraiser, and is the way the team pays for equipment and trips:
• players received packets with info/sales slips for the mulch. If you did not receive a packet, contact Coach Estacio ASAP to get one
• selling can continue until March 1 (that's the cutoff date for the incentive contest). Players are encouraged to get out and sell while the weather is warm and people are thinking about their yards
• March 20 is the delivery day. All players will be at the school that Saturday from 8-3 delivering 4,000-5,000 bags of mulch. Parent volunteers are needed to help with breakfast and lunch and to help drive the delivery vehicles (especially if they have a truck/trailer). |

In 2003 Estacio was named the head coach of the Chapel Hill Tigers and led them to three state championships in five years, including back-to-back titles in 2007 and 2008. He was awarded PAC VI Coach of the Year honors in 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007, and 2008, and was named NCHSLA Coach of the Year in 2006.
